1 Month Old

Our little miss Locklyn is 1 month old today! The month has flown by- it doesn't help that we don't ever seem to stay home! Locklyn is the easiest baby, she eats, sleeps and poops (a lot!) She is usually sleeping 5-6 hours at night and eats every 2 1/2-3 hours during the day.

She is in 0-3 month clothes now and growing out of newborn diapers. We used to joke when I was nursing Kynlie that I must make skim milk because she struggled so much gaining weight, this time, I must be making cream because Locklyn is gaining like crazy! As of Tuesday, she was 9 lb 5 oz.
She loves her pacifier, being swaddled when she sleeps at night, finally getting to take tub baths and cuddling. She still has a pretty good head of dirty blonde that gets crazy after baths. Hopefully Locklyn continues to be so laid back, life will be easy with her!

I just had to attach this cute picture of Kynlie taking a bath tonight. She can be a stressful child at times, but she is also so cute and silly, she has a smile and giggle that just melt my heart.

If you asked most parents, they would tell you that the day their child was born was one of the best days of their life. Sadly for us, that was not the case. The day Kynlie was born was one of the scariest, saddest, stressful times of our life. We had lost her twin sister, she was very tiny and very sick and we were very unsure if she was going to live or not. Thank God she did and today, we have healthy, rotten two year old that likes to wear her swimming suit with her hat and mittens while singing!

They were all in the laundry basket to be put away and she dug then all out, and insisted she wear them. I am one of those "pick your battle" kind of moms and that was one I wasn't going to fight. If she wants to wear her swimsuit and hat and mittens, whatever! We didn't plan on going anywhere today anyways!

Two years ago, today, was one of the most exciting days of our life. It was the day we FINALLY, after 110 days  in the NICU in Bismarck, ND, got to bring our 5 lb 3 oz baby girl home! We almost didn't get discharged from the hospital that day as every road into Baker was closed that morning. Neil and I watched the road reports like hawks, waiting for some of the red lines to disappear so we could inform Dr. Ocejo that we  were going home that day! Thankfully, the roads got cleared off enough that they opened and we loaded our precious cargo up and headed for home!
One of Kynlie's nurses made her an adorable, delicious cake that said "Look out Montana, here comes Kynlie" We ate cake, took tons of pictures, gave lots of hugs and I got wheeled to the door with Kynlie on my lap!
She looked so tiny in her carseat- it is the same one Locklyn is in and she definetly fills it up a bit more! January 26, 2010 was one of the best days of our lives, one Neil or I will never forget!

Lots going on

We had some family pictures done by Bohle Images a week after Locklyn was born- Kynlie kind of stole the show hamming it up with her best friend Sterling. We got some great pictures out of the session.
Monday night we headed to Bismarck after Neil got off work for two days full of doctor appointments.

The trip went south when Kynlie got woke up by the toilet flushing after she had been asleep for a couple of hours already. Turns out that a couple of hours of sleep are enough to keep a two year old running until after 4:30 am;) Needless to say we were all, minus Locklyn (that kid will sleep through anything) exhausted on Tuesday!
The first appointment we had was with Dr. Samson, the optometrist. He said that Kynlie is doing very well with using both eyes, she easily switches back and forth between using either eye. We were concerned last visit as she was having a hard time switching to using her left eye, the one that turns in. She has gotten a lot better about letting us put her "pretty" (patch) on her eye, then she hates to take them off, so they get left on for hours. He still doesn't want to put her in glasses for her nearsightedness, but he said that she will eventually need them. He was very impressed with how Kynlie's vision is doing.
After our appointment with Dr. Samson, we had to go to the other eye clinic to see Dr. Litchfield. He said that he had to look very close to even see the scaring that is in Kynlie's eyes from the surgery she had for the ROP. He said as far as the retina, everything looks perfect. He did say that sometime before she is 5, she will need to have surgery to straighten out her eyes. He said that ther is no reason to wait but there is no hurry to get it done. He said that if we did it sooner, the only benefits are we wouldn't have to patch and cosmetically it looks better. We decided we would just get the scheduling going for that as it can take 6-8 weeks to get in for the surgery. He does want to refer us to a surgeon that does more of that kind of surgery on kids though, and he said that Rapid City has one tha the has used a lot so it looks like that's where we'll be headed in the near future.
Tuesday afternoon, we went to Medcenter One for Kynlie's appointment with Dr. Ocejo. It is always great to see him again! Kynlie weighed 26 lbs and was 34" long, which are all in the 10th percentile. He said he wasn't concerned about her being small, she's already done a lot of catching up and she will probably be tall like Neil and I! He had a lot of fun playing with her and they both giggled a lot! He said she looked great, keep doing what we are doing and see him again in a year. He said we could start to try weaning her off her reflux medicine so we are going to do that. He also gave us some good pointers on discipline and helping Kynlie adjust to having the new baby around.

After Kynlie's appointment, we went up to the NICU to see her nurses. We got to see quite a few of them that took care of Kynlie a lot so it was great catching up. One of them even came running out of the NICU to see us when she heard we were there! That place sure brings back a lot of memories!

They were also having their well baby clinic so we went and got Locklyn weighed and measured. She weighed 9 lb 5 oz- she likes her milk!
Wednesday morning, Neil had an eye appointment with Kynlie's eye doctor to talk about getting Lasik surgery done on his eyes. He thinks it's a go as he is getting to the point that he needs to wear his glasses all the time and he doesn't like that at all!
Wednesday afternoon, Kynlie had her last NICU follow up for PT and OT. They both discharged her from the program and said that they were very impressed with all the progress Kynlie has made in the last 6 months. She is doing a lot of things that aren't expected for quite a few more months so that was great to hear. They want us to work with her on jumping and trying to get her to determine her dominant hand. I know I am a proud mom, but I have to say that I am SO impressed with the fact that statistically, Kynlie shouldn't be with us, and she is almost completley caught up to her actual age for size and developmentally!
On the way home, I called Kynlie's speech therapist to see if she had any openings she could squeeze us into and there luckily was one at the exact time we were going through Dickinson. I absolutely LOVE watching her appointments because Kynlie tries SOOOooo hard to do exactly what Valerie is asking her and it is adorable. She is making huge progress, she will repeat every consonant sound you ask, she is repeating some words and she is getting so much better at getting her vowel sounds right. I'm sure in a month or two I'll ask myself "What was I thinking wanting her to talk?" The girl is already a jabber mouth, I can only imagine what she'll say when she's got real words!

3 weeks

The girls and I survived our first week at home without dad! I'm not going to lie, it was tough! Kynlie loves Locklyn and is so sweet to her, but she was super whiney to me from the instant she woke up in the morning until Neil got home from work. No matter what I did for her, she was whining.

Friday, my mom went with us to Dickinson for Kynlie's speech appointment. I love going to the appiontments, Kynlie is so adorable because she tries SO hard to do whatever the pathologist asks her to do. Valerie said that itself is a huge step as she has a lot of kids that won't even try. Kynlie is doing better with being able to make her vowel and consonant sounds but when she is asked to put them in a word, she struggles.

Valerie thinks we need to work at getting Kynlie to use sign language again to help her communication be less frustrating, which she is picking up quickly. She also wants me to make a list of some simple words that we could work on with Kynlie that would be helpful if she used them every day. She also gave me some cheek and lip stretches that she wants me to do with Kynlie every day.

Monday, I braved the cold and took both girls to Dickinson by myself for appointments. Locklyn had her two week checkup and Kynlie had speech. Locklyn's appointment went great, she was 21.5" long, which is in the 75%, she weighed 8 lb 15 oz, which is in the 50% and her head measured 14.2"  which was in the 75%.  She is still a little jaundice but the doc wasn't concerned about it at all. She wants us to start her on some vitamin D and keep doing everything else we are doing.
Checking eachother out
Kynlie has adjusted well to having a new baby around. She is over the whining now and tries to help with whatever she can with Locklyn. It's pretty cute, if Locklyn so much as squeaks, Kynlie is literally running to the nearest pacifier so she can try to shove it in Locklyn's mouth!

It's fun!

Being a big sister is fun! Kynlie is loving it!  The only bad thing is, I can't put Locklyn down anywhere without being right there to keep Kynlie from covering her up- face too, giving her her pacifier, trying to pick her up, burp her, whatever Kynlie thinks Locklyn needs, Kynlie will do!

This morning, Kynlie was whining and I told her I did't understand what she wanted. She grabbed a pillow off the couch, threw it on the recliner chair, crawled up there and patted the pillow beside her. She held Locklyn that way last night and that's what she wanted to do again! It was adorable!

Kynlie has to help me burp Locklyn, but by help, I mean she (not so nicely) removes my hand from where I was burping Locklyn so she can pat her there. If Locklyn is crying, Kynlie runs to wherever the nearest pacifier is to get it to try to shove in Locklyn's mouth.
The only place Locklyn is safe is on our bed, it's the only place Kynlie can't get to her, but we do have to beware of flying phones, toys, shoes, whatever Kynlie has in her hand at the time.
Life as a family of 4 has been great! Locklyn sleeps well, sometimes going 5 hours between feedings at night! Kynlie has adjusted well to having Locklyn around, the only thing that is hard on her/us is I can't pick her up and carry her around like she is used to. I do pick her up, I am just careful about it but I don't carry her.

Neil was home all week last week, which was great for all of us. Him and Kynlie got some great time together. He did most everything around the house, which I already miss!

I thank God every day for giving us Locklyn, she is truely a blessing and the perfect fit to our family!
